How to Do a Wedding Day First Look (and Why It’s Special)

A "first look" is a heartfelt, private moment between a couple before the ceremony where they see each other dressed for the first time. It can be incredibly emotional and adds a deeply personal touch to your wedding day timeline.  While first looks were not a thing 16 years ago when I got married, I've seen hundreds of couples choose this special moment over the year, and it NEVER disappoints.

Why It’s Special

1. Intimate Connection: Sharing this moment away from guests allows couples to express genuine emotions without an audience. It often leads to authentic reactions, tears, and laughter.
2. Eases Nerves: Seeing each other before the ceremony can reduce anxiety and create a calming effect, helping you both feel more grounded and present.
3. More Time Together: A first look extends the amount of time you spend together on your wedding day, making the experience more memorable.
4. Better Photos: Photographers love first looks because the lighting can be controlled, and the couple is typically more relaxed, leading to stunning, candid shots. Imagine getting all of your bridal party photos done before the ceremony.  Your after-ceremony photos can focus on family portraits.  And no, you don't need to have a traditional 2+ hour long cocktail hours.  Guests appreciate the food and drinks, but they are ready to see you guys enter the reception hall for the first time and get dinner rolling.

How to Do a First Look

1. Choose the Right Time: Schedule your first look 1-2 hours before the ceremony to allow for photos and a quiet moment together.  Keep in mind that some guests will start showing up 45 minutes- 1hour prior to your ceremony time. 
2. Pick a Private Location: Work with your photographer to find a beautiful, secluded spot that feels meaningful and allows you both to be yourselves.  Lucky for us here at Cherry Barc Farm, we have 12.5 acres at your disposal for any and all of your photos.  Choose from a first look in our historic reception barn or 'out back' among the wildflowers and apple orchard.  The first look locations are endless.
3. Decide on the Reveal: You can walk up and tap your partner on the shoulder, have them turn around, or stand back-to-back before turning to face each other. Choose what feels natural for you.
4. Have Tissues Ready: Emotions run high during first looks, and a handkerchief or tissues can be a sweet and practical addition.
5. Include Your Photographer: Ensure your photographer is ready to capture the moment discreetly, preserving your reactions without interrupting the intimacy.
6. Who will view your first look?  While most couples envision just the two of them, it's not uncommon for the wedding party and parents to be standing off to the side during this moment. Do you want them there?  Pre-discuss this with your fiancé, photographer and family to make sure everyone is on the same page as to your wants.
